In the tundra many of the Nenets girls have dislocated hips
Why? Because after a Nenet family has several girl babies they will purposely dislocate or break the child's hip or leg believing that this will prevent having more girl babies. So, many girls in Arctic are limping around with traumatic dislocated hips that was inflicted by their parents because of ignorance and superstition. Several Russian medical and social agencies are working hard to correct this primitive superstition but it will take a generation to produce change.
TB is becoming rampant in northern Russia...
The germ is quickly becoming resistant to all known medicines. This will affect all of society... as mothers, children, schools, orphanages, elderly... everyone, will be exposed to these new resistant strains of TB. The Russian Medical System is working hard to correct this problem but this task is huge.
High Blood Pressure
Agape often sees very interesting medical patients. Several patients had a BP so high that our BP cuff could not register it!!!! This lady has a BP of more that 300/180. We have seen more than a dozen of these cases and they still amaze us.
The Systolic pressure was off the scale because our BP cuff would only measure 300 mm Hg.!! Doctors, like to see the bottom number (diastolic) below 90 if possible, or at least between 90-100. We saw one patient with a diastolic pressure of 220 mm Hg and 30 minutes later another with a diastolic of 200. The lady in the picture has a diastolic pressure of 180.
According to the medical books, all these people should be dead from a stroke!! But, they are not, and many of them have no complaints. One person started doing exercises and said “I feel fine”.
Rickets
Rickets is often seen in the far northern regions! Most physicians in western countries will never see this disease except in a textbook. But, the Health Ministry estimates that 50% of the children in the far north suffer from the affects of Rickets.
Rickets is a severe bone deforming disease caused by a lack of Vitamin D and sunlight. It mostly affects growing children. This child is nearly 4 years old and because of the severe deformity of the legs, she can barely walk!! When treated early Rickets is curable with proper medicines.
Fungal nails
This is a rare fungal disease of the nails and because it has been untreated for many years, it has also caused deformity of the fingers. It is hard to do the simplest things when your hands are deformed this way.
